“Kyle proposed to me on top of a waterslide in Spain called the Dragon’s Tongue. He asked if I would marry him then quickly jumped down the slide, when I went down after him he was sitting at the bottom on one knee.
Saint Luke’s was the perfect venue for us as we were looking for somewhere with a laidback, relaxed feel that was also striking and dramatic. We wanted our wedding to have a really dark gothic atmosphere with Mexican kitsch influences, and as a converted church, Saint Luke’s was spot on.
We were able to have the curtains drawn and lit the space mainly by fairy lights and candles. We were really inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s film Romeo + Juliet and envisioned the ceremony looking like the final ‘death’ scene.
Choosing a venue that was dog-friendly was also a must so we could include our chihuahua Ralph.
We played all the music that was meaningful to us, had our favourite Mexican food and a temporary tattoo stand, and even booked a Cher drag queen for the evening reception.
We didn’t want traditional, stiff wedding photos. Kyle knew Sean Campbell through friends and decided to ask if he’d be our photographer. Sean totally got the aesthetic we were looking for. We sent him an eclectic list of inspirations including the No Doubt video ‘Excuse Me Mr’, Romeo + Juliet and the Cholo Goth subculture."
Top tip: "I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a dress for just one day! I found the perfect solution through Bliss Studio – the dresses are mainly second hand so you are able to get a beautiful, affordable dress that you can sell back after. Stephanie, who runs the shop, completely understood my sense of style. This shop is brilliant if you’re worried about costs, or conscious about the impact of buying a new dress on the environment."
