Expert advice on how to handle wedding dress regret from the seamstress specialists at Karen Rotchford Bridal Alterations in Glasgow
It’s the delivery you’ve been dreaming of... but when your wedding dress arrives, something feels off. Maybe it doesn’t fit quite right. Maybe you don’t feel like you in it anymore. If this sounds familiar, don’t panic: you’re not the only bride who’s been there.
Jasmine Rotchford, operations manager of Glasgow-based bridal alterations specialist, Karen Rotchford Bridal Alterations, shares her expert advice on how to handle that dreaded dress doubt – and how your gown can still become 'the one'.
Five tips from a wedding dress alteration expert to combat wedding dress regret
1. Take a breath – you’re not alone
Plenty of brides have a wobble when their dress first arrives. Maybe it’s the fit, the fabric, or just a gut feeling.
Jasmine offers reassurance: “So many women experience that ‘oh no’ moment. It doesn’t mean you made the wrong choice – it just means the dress isn’t finished yet.”
2. Remember: alterations can work wonders
Whether it’s adding sleeves, altering the hemline or completely reshaping the bodice, custom bridal alterations can transform how a gown looks and feels.
“A well-chosen seamstress can take a dress from 'not me' to 'made for me',” Jasmine explains.

3. Don’t rush to buy a second dress
It’s tempting to start browsing again, but hold fire and speak to a professional before making any big decisions.
“Sometimes the fix is simple, sometimes it’s creative – but in many cases, the dress you already have just needs some expert love to become your dress,” says Jasmine.

“Bride Hannah came to us thinking her only option was to buy a new dress, but we were able to help her realise that the gown had incredible potential and, with a number of thoughtful alterations, could truly reflect her personality and flatter her figure," Jasmine of Karen Rotchford Bridal Alterations says. 4. Be open to possibilities
You’d be amazed what a few thoughtful changes can do. Jasmine’s advice?
“Trust your instincts, but also trust the experience of your seamstress – we see potential in every stitch.”
It's also worth considering if new or different accessories might help. Veils, bridal capes, jackets, removable sleeves and toppers could all help transform the look, alongside hair accessories and jewellery.
5. You deserve to love your dress
If something doesn’t feel right, speak up.
“Brides sometimes worry about offending someone – but you and your dress experience come first,” says Jasmine.
“With the right guidance you can feel confident, comfortable, and completely yourself on your wedding day.”
Need expert help altering your wedding dress?
Even if you absolutely love your wedding dress and it feels like a good fit when you try it on, chances are it still needs professional alterations to truly flatter your shape.
"Did you know, most wedding dresses are made in standard sizes and not tailored to your body?" Jasmine explains.
"Bridal sizing runs differently than high street sizing. Often your dress is ordered to fit the largest measurement (bust, waist, or hips), and then altered down for a perfect silhouette – that's where we come in.
"From subtle nips and tucks to full reshaping, our expert seamstresses work their magic so your dress feels like it was made just for you.
"We believe every bride deserves that wow moment in the mirror – and it starts with the fit."
The Karen Rotchford team offer specialist bridal alterations to transform dresses across Scotland – whether you need a few tweaks or a complete rethink.
