Improving your haircare
Every detail matters on your wedding day, especially your hair.
“To achieve your dream look, start your haircare routine at least six months ahead of time,” says bridal styling and extensions specialist Chantal Heggie at Sóif De Lox in Coatbridge.
“This gives you enough time to address any issues, such as damage or dryness, and allows your hair to grow healthier and stronger.”
Creating a bridal haircare routine
But just how do you create a haircare routine? Chantal talks us through the process:
- Regular trims: Even if you’re growing your hair out, schedule a trim every eight to ten weeks to remove split ends and prevent further breakage. Healthy hair will hold a style better.
- Invest in salon-quality haircare products: High-quality products are formulated with ingredients that nourish and protect your hair, ensuring it’s in the best condition for your special day. Better ingredients = better results.
- Moisturise: Use a weekly deep-conditioning mask apply oil or a leave-in treatment to maintain hydration and shine.
- Eat for your hair: A balanced diet rich in foods containing omega 3 (such as mackerel and salmon), biotin (bananas, eggs) and vitamin E (wheatgerm, almonds) can boost hair growth and strength. Drinking plenty of water helps give shinier hair.
- Scalp care: Use a bi-weekly scalp scrub to remove any build-up and unclog hair follicles. This will also help to promote hair growth.
Expert hair hacks that every bride needs to know
Figuring out the condition of your hair
Bridal hair and makeup artist Lee Hanna, aka The Blushed Bride, agrees that it’s vital to improve the health of your hair before your wedding.
“One of the biggest issues I see is dehydration,” she tell us. “Static can be an indicator of this – if you have it, your hair is most likely dehydrated. Healthy, hydrated hair is the key to any style, so focus on using hydrating shampoos and conditioners, plus do a weekly deep- conditioning treatment.
“One thing to avoid, however, is over-washing."
"And be sure to switch to a microfibre towel as this will help reduce frizz further,” The Blushed Bride's Lee continues.
“As the wedding approaches also use a boar bristle brush and apply a light touch of hair oil to tame static. This will keep your locks naturally radiant and smooth.”
How to choose your wedding hairstyle
You want to feel like the best version of yourself on your wedding day, and finding the right hairstyle will help achieve that.
However, with so many options out there, it can be a challenge to decide which one to go for.
"The style of your dress can be an influence,” suggests Chantal. “Your hairstyle should enhance the design of the dress, so pay attention to details like the neckline or any intricate features – whether it’s off the shoulder, backless, has a low back or a high neck. Pinterest is a great place to find inspiration.”

Your hair texture will determine the overall look too, she says.
“Take into account if you have curly or straight hair, fine or thick, plus the length too.”
Another thing to consider is your venue and wedding theme. But ultimately, comfort is key: “While it’s important to select a hairstyle that enhances your look, it’s equally crucial to feel at ease,” Chantal points out. “Choose a style that allows you to feel like your best self.
Groom hairstyles
If there’s ever a time for grooms to look dapper and, yes, well groomed, it’s their wedding day.
“Timing your haircut is key – I’d say one to two weeks before the wedding is ideal,” suggests Chantal.
“This allows time for the haircut to settle and look natural but still feel fresh. If you’re trying out a new style, give yourself a few months to experiment and make sure you’re happy with it.”
And what’s her advice on facial hair? “Get a beard trim or shape-up a couple of days before the wedding. That’s enough time for everything to settle down but still appear smart and fresh.”
Bridal hair Q&A
“Hair extensions can transform your look and help create a voluminous hairstyle,” says Chantal.
“If you don’t want the commitment of semi-permanent extensions, opt for temporary clip-ins instead. These offer not only the volume you’re looking for, but are versatile enough to create any style.
“I’d recommend washing it the night before, or even two days prior, depending on your style,” Chantal advises. “Freshly washed hair can be too slippery to hold.”
